Treatment for periodontal disease

It is ESSENTIAL we work together to help you achieve a beautifully clean mouth.

Plaque is a normal part of everyone's mouth but as we have discussed, in some people it causes problems

Plaque control – by this I mean effectively removing the soft plaque from your teeth and gums twice a day, every day. This plaque control is KEY to all future gum disease problems, treatment and prognosis

Basic home care regime:

  • Use and interspace brush meticulously around the gum line.
  • Use an interdental cleaning aid in the space between every tooth.
  • Use a manual or electric toothbrush to clean ALL accessible surfaces of every tooth with a fluoride toothpaste.

Home care regime

In my opinion this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART OF GUM DISEASE - In most cases, your home care regime should involve all of these tools. My preference is to use them in the order above, but we will work together to achieve your own tailored approach

We will not begin professional treatment of periodontal disease until the plaque levels in your mouth are suitable. We spend lots of time discussing this in practice as it is proven that treatment success is greatly reduced in the presence of excess plaque.

Non surgical periodontal treatment (deep cleaning)

Professional cleaning will not begin until appropriate plaque levels are achieved from your current home care.

  • Removal of remaining soft plaque, any hard debris or plaque retentive factors from vulnerable areas
  • Gentle, precise disruption of the environment below the gum where the harmful bacteria contribute to inflammation

  • Create a tailored home care regime to prevent the bacteria for accumulating again too quickly

  • Regular reviews and reassessment

Surgical Treatment

Surgical treatment involves manipulating or moving the gum or bone with precise instruments, to improve the health of that site.

For example, if we have carried out non surgical treatment/deep cleaning but areas of active disease remain then sometimes it is beneficial to perform some minor oral surgery to better access these sites.

These areas tend to be localised and small, around teeth with potential value to the health and function of your mouth.

There are various approaches to this type of treatment, the advantages to you we can discuss together.

Regenerative procedures

The possibility of regenerating bone and gum in the mouth is now a reality, through the application of advanced techniques and superior materials.

This is not always possible and there are several factors that affect success. We only consider this when the majority of active disease is under control and you and I have achieved stability elsewhere in your mouth. However, we now have the capability to regenerate bone and soft tissues using several techniques.
