It is now understood that untreated periodontal disease can have effects on general health, for example; it is proven to have a direct relationship with diabetes. We know that, unstable diabetes can have a negative effect on periodontal disease.
There is good evidence to show that controlling periodontal disease can have a positive effect on the stability of a patient's diabetes. In some cases it can be as effective as the diabetic medication itself.
Evidence suggests that there may be an increased risk of heart disease or stroke with unstable periodontal disease. It can also play a role in other inflammatory health issues like rheumatoid arthritis and even dementia.
It can be linked to increased risk for complications during pregnancy (premature birth and low birth weight).
